A scrappy game ended in a 1-1 draw with Hackney Reserves

After no matches for the past two weeks, Actonians Third Team travelled to Hackney Reserves on a warm Sunday afternoon to resume their League Campaign.

Actonians started quite brightly stringing some nice passes together but Hackney Reserves began to find a little bit of space and start to threaten the Actonian’s goal. Saoirse was forced into an early fantastic save, palming a point blank effort onto the crossbar.
Actonians worked very hard as a unit and tried to counter with their own threat which did unsettle Hackney’s defence at times. So much so, that in the 28th minute Actonians won a free kick just inside the opposition half. Kirsty floated the ball towards goal which bounced just before reaching the Hackney keeper and over her head into the goal. 1-0 and a great time to mark the team’s first goal of the season.
Unfortunately only 2 minutes later and Hackney were level. Hackney’s tricky right winger made a run down the by-line and into Actonian’s penalty area. Cat made an attempt to win the ball with a slide tackle, the ball was cleared and then the Hackney winger went down over Cat’s outstretched leg onto the turf. The referee gave a penalty which was expertly dispatched by Hackney. 1-1 and this remained the score until half time.

The 2nd half began and Actonians started to take the game to Hackney Reserves, and threaten a lot more with some more direct play. They won a couple of dangerous free kicks on the edge of the penalty area which the Hackney keeper had to be alert to cling on to. However Hackney were able to weather the storm and started to settle again. The game still remained fairly end to end, with a few meaty tackles flying in from both teams. Saoirse and the back 4 for Actonians had to stay on heavy alert to shut out any clear cut chances. Hackney did hit the bar again from close range and came close with a long range effort which just went past the post. Yet at the other end, Kirsty nearly stole all 3 points at the end with a great driving run and low shot that the Hackney keeper did well to get down low and save.

Full time 1-1. It was a good battle where Actonians can be pleased to get their first point of the season in a game that could have gone either way.
